Buddhists must not engage in false speech, but this does not necessarily mean that the truth can be spoken without any consideration.
In principle, one must always speak truthfully. But in circumstances when the truth is unsuitable, you must engage with white lies. Sometimes white lies are preferable to the truth. While they may be deceitful, they can nevertheless resolve conflicts and minimize disagreements.
A skillful speaker avoids controversies just as an unskillful speaker spreads them.
